Chiropractic

Q: How many Chiropractors does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: Just one, but it takes 36 visits.

This simple joke illustrates the number one complaint people have about Chiropractors. Many people love Chiropractic treatment, but can't stand their Chiropractor who constantly harasses them to come in two to three times per week on an ongoing basis. This is not the case in our office. In our office, after your condition has been successfully treated, you can choose to return for maintenance treatments on a regular basis, or you can choose to return as needed. We will not pressure you either way. Here are some answers to other questions about Chiropractic that make our office different.

Mesa Chiropractic office located in Tempe, Brown Chiropractic & Acupuncture, provides Chiropractic treatment for patients all over metro Phoenix including Phoenix, Chandler and Scottsdale.

Will I get treated on my first visit to your office?

Our priority is to begin treatment for your condition as soon as possible. Unless Dr. Brown sees some specific reason not to begin treatment on your first visit, you will normally recieve treatment on your first visit.

How long does it usually take to see results?

Our average patient in pain is out of pain in 1-6 treatments. The fastest results are obtained by combining Chiropractic with Acupuncture and Physiotherapy. Dr. Brown is a board-certified Physiotherapist and includes electric muscle stimulation, infrasound, ice therapy and moist heat therapy to get the fastest results.

Why do some Chiropractors routinely recommend 30-40 treatments or more?

We don't know. We do know that when you combine Chiropractic with Acupuncture and Physiotherapy, results are much faster.

Are x-rays always required?

Not in our office. Dr. Brown only orders x-rays if they are medically necessary for your specific condition. To insure our patients receive the highest quality digital x-rays possible, we have our x-rays taken at a professional x-ray facility, and your x-rays will be interpreted by Dr. Brown and a professional radioligist. Even if you have no insurance coverage for Chiropractic, health insurance will normally pay for x-rays ordered by a Doctor of Chiropractic if the x-rays are taken at a professional x-ray facility.

What if I need an MRI?

Doctors of Chiropractic are qualified to order and interpret MRI examinations. Even if you have no insurance coverage for Chiropractic, health insurance will normally cover MRI examinations ordered by a Doctor of Chiropractic.

Does your office prescribe arch supports and foot orthotics?

Absolutely. Dr. Brown recommends and personally uses custom-made Spinal-Pelvic Stabilizers from Foot Levelers. Spinal-Pelvic Stabilizers are used in the treatment and prevention of extremity and spinal problems. We have equipment in our office to cast your feet and determine the best type of orthotic for you.

What is Chiropractic?

The word Chiropractic comes from the Greek words "chiro" (meaning "hand") and "praktikós" (meaning "to practice with"). Therefore, Chiropractic means "to practice with the hand". Essentially, Chiropractic is a system of healthcare that emphasizes manual and natural approaches to healthcare over surgical and medical approaches to healthcare. Doctors of Chiropractic utilize manual manipulation of joints and soft tissues to treat neuromusculoskeletal conditions. Many Chiropractors also include treatment with Physiotherapy, Acupuncture, Massage Therapy and Nutrition along with exercises and health and lifestyle counseling.

What type of education and licensing do Doctors of Chiropractic have?

A Chiropractic program consists of five academic years of professional education at an accredited college averaging a total of 4,822 hours of coursework, which is about the same as for Medical Doctors. However, instead of courses in medications and surgery, Chiropractic programs include courses in Manipulation, Physiotherapy, Nutrition and Advanced X-Ray. Doctors of Chiropractic are licensed as primary care physicians in all 50 states, and State licensing boards regulate the Chiropractic profession just as in the Medical profession. There are 18 Chiropractic colleges in the United States and 44 Chiropractic colleges worldwide.

What do Chiropractors mean by the term "Subluxation"?

"Sub" means "less than", and "luxation" means "dislocation". So "subluxated" joints are partially, but not completely, dislocated. When Chiropractic was founded by D.D. Palmer in 1895, the term subluxation was used to refer to joints that were thought to be out of alignment and causing pressure on the surrounding nerves. However, D.D. Palmer did not have the benefit of today's modern imaging techniques, as x-rays were only just discovered by Dr. William Röntgen also in 1895. With modern imaging techniques, we know now that even joints that are in normal alignment can cause irritation to not only the surrounding nerves but to the other soft tissues surrounding the joint. Although many Chiropractors (and the following video) still use the word "subluxation", Dr. Brown prefers the term "fixation" which more accurately describes the problem as we now understand it. Joints (whether they are misaligned or not) can become "fixated" or "stuck" as a result of injury, overuse or poor posture. The joints then become inflamed, causing pain, muscle spasm and irritation to the surrounding nerves, muscles, ligaments and tendons. Chiropractic manipulation restores proper motion to joints and stops the resulting pain, inflammation and muscle spasm.
